Information technology seems like you lot're having a lot of trouble, and I have something you can effort.
If I read your explanation clearly, y'all never actually installed the commuter for Windows 8.
I've read up on it, and with Windows 7, the driver is downloaded and installed automatically when connecting the controller, but in Windows eight, the driver is part of the operating organization.

Howdy NLC,
Sad to hear you lot're having issues with your controllers.
Accept you tried using the Windows viii device troubleshooter?
You can access it by:
- On theShowtime screen, clickCommand Panel.
- ClickView Devices and Printers.
- Verify that the controller appears netherDevices, and then correct-click the controller, and clickGame controller settings.
- Check theStatus of the controller, and then clickProperties.
- On theTest tab, test that the controller works correctly. If there are any issues, clickCalibrate on theSettings tab.
- If you keep to experience whatever problems, right-click the controller underDevices inDevices and Printers, and and then clickTroubleshoot.
If that doesn't assistance sort things out, I would also recommend Uninstalling your controller software, redownloading it, and reinstalling it. You can find the controller software here: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/downloads#gaming
Delight permit us know how that works for yous and nosotros'll go from there.

I had already seen the stuff you lot posted me and tried to follow them... Simply when I go to Devices and Printers and right-click, "Game controller settings" isn't there every bit an option! That'due south what I meant when I wrote "it seems that it isn't considered a gaming device". When I effort Troubleshoot, it simply doesn't see any problems.
I don't empathize what FullM3ta1 meant when he said "but in Windows viii, the driver is part of the operating system.". Then what, you call up that, for whatever, information technology wasn't included? That's possible, so how would I download it manually? I think the trouble's in the Microsoft software, however, for the device IS actually there, but information technology's some sort of "full general device". I'll leave the thread hither and hope someone else finds something.

Hello NLC,
I've done some more digging and here'due south a couple solutions that folks have said work with Windows 8 x64:
1.Uninstall any drivers yous've tried to install already - go to device managing director and uninstall the driver for the "unknown device" (which is just uninstalling the device really, seeing there is no driver) and likewise uninstall any commuter software through control panel. LEAVE THE DEVICE PLUGGED IN.
2.Restart PC.
iii.Download and install the latest driver from the Microsoft Site.
iv.Restart PC.
five.Go to device manager - you'll discover it all the same shows up as an unknown device. Correct click on information technology and go Update Commuter.
vi.Click "Browse my computer for software".
vii.Click "Let me pick from a listing of drivers on my computer".
viii. The listing will have a while to load. Select Microsoft, and so on the correct, select Xbox Wireless Receiver for Windows (there might be multiple versions, go with what looks like the most contempo 1 - mine was 2.i.0.1349) and click next. It will warn you about possible incompatibility, install information technology anyway.
nine.Information technology will ask yous to restart. Do it.
x.In one case restarted, become to device manager and you should notice a new slot - "Microsoft Common Controller for Windows Class", and nether it, "Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows". Yay!
xi.Now effort pairing your controller with the receiver. Click the push on the receiver, so hold the big xbox push button on the controller until it turns on and press the very small "connect" button on the forward side of the controller (the side with the triggers), while the receiver light is still flashing. Your controller low-cal should spin for a fraction of a second and and so Sync up and the first quadrant should stay lit. Yay!

some people have had success by unplugging their USB devices and restarting and plugging in just the receiver first, then it syncs, so try their other USB devices again

- Right click on Computer, click properties, click Device Director
- Go down to where information technology shows the USB Connections and right click on the Unknown Device
- Select Properties, and in the little window that pops upward, select the Driver Tab and click Update Driver
- Select Scan my computer for driver software, then Let me pick from a listing of device drivers on my calculator.
- After you lot click Next, a list of different peripherals will pop upwardly -- scroll ALL THE Manner TO THE Lesser and you should encounter an entry that says Xbox 360 Peripherals. Select that and click Next.
- The last driver in the list is Xbox 360 wireless Receiver for Windows Version: half dozen.2.9200.16384 [7/25/2012]
- Select it and click Adjacent, then click aye when the driver alarm box pops up. The driver should install, and yous should get a box that says Windows has successfully updated your commuter software.
- Close the window and turn on your wireless controller.
- Printing the sync button on the receiver, so on the controller. It should sync right up, and if you printing the Home button (Big silverish button with funky green X embedded in information technology) A small popup should come on your screen showing you the quadrant your controller is continued to, your battery condition, and Click for Help.
What Total ways with the "driver is role of the operating arrangement" is that the drivers should come up built in to the Bone and you should not have to download them. If in that location are issues with the drivers that came automatically with your Os though, deleting and reinstalling from the link I provided before may aid.
Please keep u.s. posted on how things go.

Thanks again. I tried it, merely the true problem (due to the fact that the drivers are already in the Bone) is that I never actually get an "unknown device". I'chiliad tired of trying, I retrieve I'll only try again when I'll upgrade to eight.1... And maybe I'll buy a cheap joystick in the meantime.
Cheers all again, guys!

Have you tried piugging in the controller WITHOUT any downloaded drivers? The other answers recommend redownloading the drivers, but y'all should try plugging it in without downloading annihilation. The Win7 drivers might exist interfering somehow.

I accept the same problem as NLC PoKeR, and I'm already using Windows viii.ane. Mister Fizzle's suggestions didn't work for me.
For the first and tertiary suggestions, the "list of drivers" just shows ane option, "Xbox 360 Wireless Controller via Play & Accuse Kit". "Installing" information technology doesn't make whatsoever difference.
The 2nd suggestion doesn't utilise, since I don't accept a wireless receiver.
Is it possible that back up for the Play & Accuse Kit is outright broken in Windows viii, and that I need to purchase a wireless receiver or a wired controller instead?

I noticed that in Devices and Printers, the controller'southward right-click bill of fare had a Troubleshoot option. I tried it, and got a bulletin:
"Xbox 360 Wireless Controller via Play & Charge Kit is an older USB device and might not work with USB 3.0. Plug the device into an available USB two.0 port, and click Next. Otherwise, click Cancel."
I thought USB iii.0 was supposed to be strictly better than 2.0, including astern compatibility. That'south (part of) why I bought a laptop with only USB iii.0 ports. Looking on Amazon, there doesn't seem to even be a USB 3.0 version of the Play & Charge Kit; or even a generic USB 2.0 to iii.0 adapter.
